Jack Smith (born February 1989) is an English entrepreneur primarily focused on running his IT Video Training company - Mediaroots.
In his early teens, Jack worked as a freelance web designer, predominantly focused on Flash animation and development but also included website design, character animation and more; he worked for companies predominantly based in America.
Jack has considerable experience working with bay and at the age
of 15 started an operation with a friend selling video game components that presented him with his first experience in running a product based business.
Towards the end of 2005 Jack - aged 16 - had considerable free time having just completed his GCSEs and started working on
developing the concept of a video tutorial company. For the next few years he spent time developing a large library of video tutorials, making up over 70 hours of content, the operation also went through 2 rebrands before finally launching towards the end of 2008 as limited company: Mediaroots. Jack developed the company to become the largest video training provider in the UK and, a number of partnerships with Adobe and others later, moved into offices in central London and took on staff.
Somewhere in between he attended
King's College London University; initially studying Computer Science with Business Management, he quickly grew disillusioned with the programming and mathematics focused nature of the course and switched to English.
In 2009 Jack was appointed a Director of the
King's College London Business Club and quickly set about devising plans to introduce the University's first ever undergraduate business idea competition which went on to be named
IdeaBox. Not content with just revamping his own University's image, he organised and chaired a meeting between other entrepreneur societies in London including Imperial and UCL, proposing an intercollegiate business competition, plans which he hopes will be implemented in the 2010/11 academic year.
In order to raise awareness of entrepreneurship at his university, Jack organised and hosted a series of interviews in front of an audience with other successful entrepreneurs including the founder of Student Beans, these were extremely well received. Next was to undertake widespread promotions across all 3 of
KCL's campuses including handing out free cookies to gain attention; IdeaBox encouraged students to post their business ideas into a provided Idea Box. From the ideas submitted, roughly 15 finalists were chosen, highly impressed with the calibre of ideas and enthusiasm of the students to learn, Jack organised a series of workshops focused on the topics of law, marketing public speaking and more, all to prepare the candidates to pitch their ideas in a final.
Further pruning the candidates, a final 7 students were chosen to pitch their ideas to an ensemble of entrepreneurs
that Jack asked to be judges at the event, including
Julian Johnson,
Rajeeb Dey,
Brendan McCloughlin and
Ajay Mirpuri. The event was well intended and well received with the finalists receiving much praise and the networking event following proving positive. Jack holds the IdeaBox competition as one of his proudest achievements and hopes to continue inspiring other young entrepreneurs in as many capacities as he can.
